The Living Island

Inspired by the preparation tables of the Old Kitchen at Burghley House, the Living Island is very much a moveable feast ­– the free-standing piece can be fully customised to fit the way you cook, eat and live.

Bakers will appreciate the marble slab which makes light work of pastry preparation. Gardeners and disciplined cooks will welcome the attention to detail of a beautifully incorporated scrapings bin set into the oiled English sycamore top. And all those with creative inclinations will enjoy the limitless scope for creating a one-off piece using our library of finishes.

The island was created for Tom Cox of Ham Interiors with the brief being to design an exceptional piece – this example measures 3.4 metres long by 1.2 metres wide by 0.9 metres high and has been handmade in ash and copper, with brass accessories.

The Living Island is a modular piece and is available in a selection of timbers and finishes – pictured here in ash with a worn ebony finish. Our tan copper finish was used for the low shelf and perished brass was chosen for the accessories. The island may also be made to the required dimensions and may be constructed with the addition of drawers or cupboards.

Originally created as a kitchen island – the piece can also be adapted as a console table for a hallway or reception lobby, a meeting room table or as statement bar furniture. 

Speaking of the new design, Matthew says, ‘Our Living Island gives a nod to period kitchen furniture and materials, yet also fits the way we live now. We worked hard to balance our choices to make sure the island is every bit as beautiful as it is functional.  Being such a versatile piece, we’re looking for clients who are as excited as we are about being creative with their kitchens or communal spaces.’
