A sense of belonging

8 March is an excellent moment to reflect. It's where B Corp Month meets International Women's Day, so there's a natural prompt to think about how we're doing when it comes to the people in our business. And today, we're thinking especially about our women.

Furniture making is still a heavily male-dominated industry, but the women in our team are materially changing what that looks like. They bring skill, creativity and a willingness to speak up when they think something could be better — and the business is stronger for it. And we'd like to think we even help influence the industry as a whole.

We've always tried to be intentional about building a team that reflects the world a little more fairly, but really, it's the women themselves who set the tone. The younger members in particular have been brilliant at pushing things forward, first tentatively and now confidently. We've found that openness has filtered through the whole team.

It's also, we think, what underpins our B Corp score. Though it was never about the points. (The updated B Corp standards have actually moved away from points altogether.) It's just about doing right by the people who make this place what it is.

When clients visit us in Stamford, they nearly always comment on what a happy team we seem to have. And we think that, in great part, it's down to the culture the women in our team have helped build here. It's culture where things get talked about, worked through, and everyone gets on better for it.

Here's to pushing boundaries and ensuring more women get to work in a world where they feel they truly belong.
